UTILITIES CHALLENGE:

NEN Consulting was requested to assess the concept design of the High Voltage Network for WSP. The client encountered two significant issues. Firstly, tender responses received were well above the client’s expectations. Secondly, the client had concerns about their utility supply arrangements, particularly in relation to meeting capacity requirements.

At NEN, we love a challenge, and the High Voltage Network project for WSP was no exception. We knew that our unique blend of skills was perfect for the task, combining our HV engineering design capability with our expert knowledge of utility and private installation regulations. Our commercial acumen and relationships developed from working with and inside utilities was invaluable on this project.

Our team started by conducting a thorough design review and risk assessment, allowing us to identify significant cost savings and improvements to the operability and maintainability of the HV network. This meant we were able to deliver exceptional value for our client, which is always our top priority.

Our services were so successful we were subsequently engaged to complete a full, detailed redesign. We provided procurement, project management, and hands-on commissioning support to ensure the project was recovered and delivered without delay to the overall building construction.

The High Voltage Network at WSP is a complex system that includes 12MVA of maximum demand, several kilometres of 11,000 volt cables, 18 transformers, 4 vertically distributed substations, a main switch room, and a remotely monitored control (SCADA) system. It was an exciting and challenging project that allowed us to showcase our expertise and deliver real value to our client

MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

We provided a range of services for this client, including:

  • Specifying and procuring major equipment, such as transformers, switchgear, cables, and a SCADA system, through a closed tender process.
  • Procuring an electrical construction contractor, including specifying and defining scopes, and negotiating and managing commercials, through a closed tender process.
  • Providing detailed advice on compliance with relevant standards and regulations for both Utilities and private embedded networks.
  • Conducting detailed electrical system design and drafting, which included creating layouts, 3D models, engineering models and calculations, wiring and protection design, and SCADA system design.
  • Conducting engineering studies to ensure the system was efficient and safe.
  • Preparing and reviewing project documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Project management, including managing variations and interfaces with the builder and other contractors.
  • Hands-on configuration, programming, wiring, and commissioning of the SCADA system to ensure it was operating effectively.
  • Providing ongoing commissioning support and advice to ensure the system continued to operate smoothly.
